Book Print Ornaments/Ornament Exchange

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is my family's Christmas Ornament Exchange.  I don't remember the year we started it but some of my favorite ornaments came from this exchange.

This year I made book print ornaments.

I got my inspiration from Flea Market Style.

Here is how I made mine

I got this book from my Grandma's house after she passed away.  It's copyright   was 1938. Cool huh!

I started off with a simple plastic bulb from my local craft store.

I cut several circles out of the pages using a 1" circle punch.  I cut a slit in each circle so it would lay flat on the round bulb.

I started on the bottom of the ornament and put a layer of Modge Podge.

Put the circle on top of the Modge Podge

Then applied another layer of Modge Podge.  This is where the slit came in handy.  I applied the Modge Podge on one end of the slit and applied it around to the other side so it would lay smooth.

Tadaa!

Continue layering the circles so you can cover the ornament.

For the top I used a 1" circle with a smaller circle punched out of the inside so I could put it over the stem of the ornament.

And applied the same as before.

Since the ornaments started out at as silver the toppers were silver as well.  But since the pages were yellowed I thought gold would go better.  so I painted the tops.  They look a  little messy here but when all together I thought they looked really nice.

When the ornament was covered with  circles I then applied several coats of gold glitter from a spray can.  (sorry no pictures)

Here is the finished ornament!  I really like how it turned out.

On top of my tree stand I have my Family Ornament Exchange Tree where I put all of the new ornaments from that year.  This is my tree for 2011.

And here are the ornaments from all my very creative sisters, SILs and Mom.

Here are my ornaments from years past.

  3. Wow these are great! I'm a total nerd bibliophile so this is perfect. Although I think I'd print off pages instead; don't think I'd have the heart to cut into a book!

    Thank you!

  9. These turned out great. Thanks for putting in the tip of cutting in circles. I tried doing something similar with strips of paper and got frustrated. I will try the circles next time. Have a Merry Christmas!

  16. Love the book one. We got stuck with a math textbook from our white elephant, which could be a cute ornament for a teacher.
