Toy Wardrobe

My Daughter loves her Build A Bear and for her recent birthday all she wanted was items for her bear, Sara.  In a previous post I shared with you the mermaid costume I sewed.  I also made a wardrobe closet to keep all of Sara’s clothes in.

I started with a jewelry box that I got at yard sale for only $2.  I LOVE yard sales!

The rod hanging at the top wouldn’t work for what I wanted so I just used a hand saw and cut through the center of the rod and it came out easy peasy.

My daughter loves pink so I decided to paint the entire wardrobe, inside and out, pink.  I did 2 coats and so far so good!

I didn’t paint the center of the doors because I wanted to put in some cute designed scrapbook paper there.

After it was all painted the doors were sticking a little bit so my hubby took his drimel and sanded down the edges of the doors so they wouldn’t stick anymore.

After the doors were good I measured the inside of each door panel so I could cut some scrapbook paper to fit.

I put the paper in using modge podge.  I haven’t really used modge podge a whole lot but I think I used too much because the paper did wrinkle a little bit.  I am a little bummed about that but it wasn’t enough to take it out and start over.  Plus at this point it was about 10 o’clock and her party was the next day.

Since we took out the rod we put in some screw hooks so she would have something to hang the clothes on.

One thing you can’t see in the pictures is that when it was all finished I put a clear coat on it that was sparkly so the entire wardrobe has a very slight sparkle to it.

It turned out great and both my daughter and Sara love it!

Teacher Gifts

Today is the first day of school for my kiddos!

...

Sorry for the pause there I got up to do the happy dance!

So to get the year off to a great start I made little teacher gifts so the kids had a good way to say hello to their new teacher.  There isn't anything wrong with a little brown nosing is there :)  They were very inexpensive and easy to do.  For gifts for 4 teachers was $6.  I purchased 4 small pencil boxes for $.50 each and 2 bags of Lifesaver mints for $2 each.

I filled each pencil box with the Lifesavers mints

I made tags using word and then cut them out using a 2 1/2 inch circle punch and the Scallop Circles #2 die cut for the big shot.  I also used strips of ribbon I had on hand.

I asked the kids to hand write a little message to their new teacher on the back of the tags.

Then tied the tags on with the ribbon.

They turned out uber cute and the kids were very excited to have the gift to give their teachers.

I got my idea from Kierste at brown paper packages who posted this idea and I just tweaked it a little bit.  Thanks Kierste!

Yummy Pretzel Dogs

Lately I haven't been able to get enough Hot Dogs.  Crazy, I know, but I can't stop craving them.  Recently I posted a recipe for yummy Corn Dogs and that was a big hit so I thought I would share with you my pretzel dog recipe.

MMM So yummy!  My mouth is watering just looking at this picture.

ANYWAYS, for the dough I used my bread maker but if you don't have a bread maker you just make the dough the old fashioned way - by hand.

2 C bread flour1
1/2 tsp active dry yeast
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp sugar
7/8 C water
1-2 TBS coarse Salt
1 egg, slightly beaten

Mix all ingredients except salt and egg.  This is where a bread maker is wonderful because it takes care of all the mixing and kneading!  When dough has doubled its size it is ready!

Preheat oven to 450

Divide dough into 12 pieces

Roll each ball into about an 8-10 inch rope and wrap around a hot dog

Place on a greased cookie sheet

Brush each dog with beaten egg and then sprinkle with coarse salt

Bake in preheated oven for 17-20 minutes till pretzel is browned.

Then enjoy!

Next time I make these I am going to try putting toppings on them like jalapeno pepper slices and cheese.   MMMM I can't wait!

Build a Bear Mermaid Costume

My second daughter just turned 8 years old and she LOVES her Build a Bear, Sara.  She also LOVES mermaids.  So I thought I could combine the 2 and give her a one of a kind outfit for her sweet Sara, for her Birthday.

Now I am not a seamstress by any means but I know enough to fumble through. I started out by taking measurements of her bear and creating a simple pattern on white paper.

I just used a simple costume fabric that had a nice shine to it.  I am not sure of it's exact name.  I cut 2 of the tail and only 1 of the center strap and top.

For the ruffled edges I used some organza ribbon I already had on hand and stitched along one edge and then pulled the string to gather the ribbon.

I placed the 2 tail pieces right sides together but before I sewed I pinned the gathered ribbon to the inside of tail fins.  I used 2 different pieces of ribbon, one for each side.

With a seam allowance of about 1/2 inch I sewed down one side and up the other leaving the top open. For the waist I folded the top about 1 inch and sewed leaving about 1 inch unsewn so I could string the elastic.  Once the elastic was strung I then sewed the gap shut.  After I turned the tail right side out I wanted to put make the tail a little poofy but I didn't have any batting so I just used wadded up grocery sacks and pushed them into the fins of the tail.

I got really excited at this point and forgot to take lots of pictures.  BUT then I moved onto the top.  For the top I took the one piece and folded it in half length wise and sewed right side together, and then the the same with the center strap.  Pulled them both right side out.  I stuffed the top again with grocery bags until I liked the shape.  I again ruffled 2 more smaller strips of the organza ribbon to put in the center of the top.  I first hand stitched them to the center of the top and then used the thin center strap to try cover up the stitching, and hand stitched the center strap on the back of the top.  Then I hand stitched a hook and eye onto the back straps to hold the top on.

For the bracelet I found a pukka necklace at a yard sale for a quarter and just cut a small section out, took off several of the shells on each so I had some string to tie a knot.  And WALLAH! a very simple bracelet.

All of the pieces came together very nicely and it was very simple to sew.

And just in case you were wondering my daughter (and Sara) loved the new outfit!

Sparkly Christmas Ornaments

Every year my family does a homemade Christmas ornament exchange.  It is one of my favorite Christmas traditions .  So today, with my hubby's help, I will be sharing a tutorial with you on how to make these beautiful sparkly ornaments.

These are really fun to make and so easy that everyone in the family can join in!

Start off with a clear glass ornament and add about 20 drops of a stamp ink pad reinker.

Roll the ink around until the entire inside of the ornament is well coated.  DO NOT SHAKE, that will create bubbles in the ink so make sure you roll.

After the inside of the ornament is nicely covered then set upside to drain in a cup or jar.

I made an ubber simple funnel using a piece of scrap paper and then poured a couple tablespoons of super fine glitter into the ornament.

You can put on rubber gloves here if you would like so you don't get ink all over your finger.  Now shake shake shake!

Dump out the excess glitter and you have a very pretty, sparkly ornament

We had a lot of fun experimenting with different colored inks and glitters.  We even tried to make an ugly one with green ink and yellow glitter and it turned out be almost gold and very pretty.  Probably one of my favorites! You can see it to the right in the next picture.

Instead of using an ugly wire to hang the ornament, I tied it with a coordinating ribbon and bow.

I love how the lights from the tree bounced off of them.  Just beautiful!
