The Best Homemade Ranch Recipe

Ranch is a staple around here, and in fact it gets it's own spot on the food triangle.  Because Ranch is so important we have become Ranch Snobs.  We spend a lot of money on that white creamy goodness because we want the good stuff.  I have always preferred homemade dressings to store bought but have also bought plenty of bottles in my day.

Last week I came across a BYU Creamery Ranch Dressing recipe from "One Good Thing" by Jillee.  I have lived in Utah for almost 10 years and I had never had BYU's Ranch.  But it looked pretty good so I thought I would give it a try.

WOW!

This ranch is AMAZING and has quickly became our new favorite.  We used LITE buttermilk, LITE sour cream and LITE mayo and it was STILL really good.  It didn't taste at all like the lite version in the stores.  So much yummy ranch flavor!

Ingredients:
Black Pepper ¼ C
Parsley Flakes 1 1/2 C
Garlic Salt ½ C
Kosher Salt 2 Tbsp
Granulated Garlic ¼ C
Granulated Onion 3/4 C
Dill Weed 2 Tbsp

Procedure:
1. Combine all ingredients, store in an airtight container. Makes about 3 ½ cups of dry mix
2. To Make Dressing, whisk together 2 Tbsp of mix with 2 Cups each of mayonnaise and buttermilk 1 ½ Cups sour cream, & 1 tsp Lemon Juice. Refrigerate for 2 hours. Makes 1 ¾ Quarts

We bought all of the spices in the bulk section at WinCo (love that store) and spent about $2.50, THAT'S IT!

Start by putting all the dry ingredients into a gallon size zip bag

homemade dressing

I started with the bowl but found the zip bag made it much easier to mix all of the dry ingredients together.  Next time I will just put all the ingredients into a large mason jar and then just shake it.

homemade dressing

Put all of the wet ingredients in a bowl with  2 Tbsp of dry mix (This recipe makes a huge batch of dry mix so it will last a long time! BONUS!)

homemade dressing

Whip with a whisk till well combined.

homemade dressing

The recipe says to let it sit in the fridge for 2 hours but it is already nice and thick.  We tried to put it into a half gallon milk jug with a funnel but it was taking FOREVER because it was so thick.  So just carefully poor into jug (or whatever you are going to store it in.

homemade dressing

Now this picture is a little deceiving because it is not all the way full, I just shook it after we poured the ranch and so it looks full.  It was a little less then 2/3 full.

homemade dressing

But the dry mix did almost fill this mason jar.  I told you it made a ton!

homemade dressing

For dinner the next night we made homemade chicken nuggets (a family favorite) to really put the ranch to the test. It passed with flying colors.  This ranch is nice and thick (but not too thick - it still pours).

homemade dressing

So yummy!

UPDATE:  I have been asked a lot how long the ranch is good for, and I would go off of the expiration date of the buttermilk.

  23. I have the same question as stated above (How long does it last?) with a twist...I'd like to know how long it lasts once the dry mix is mixed with the wet ingredients...We have just a little bit left from our first batch (kids loved it)...the buttermilk I used would have been the first to expire...should I go by that date or does it not matter? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't know how long the mix would be good for. We use ranch seasoning a lot so I don't worry about it going bad before we can use it all. As for the ranch once it is made I would go by the date on the buttermilk.

  28. Can u substitute milk for the buttermilk?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You could always try but the buttermilk really helps with the creaminess. With only milk it may be a little watery.

      Delete
    2. I tried it with a "buttermilk substitute" recipe (lemon juice and milk) because all the buttermilk from the store expire so quickly...it tastes just as good, it's just really thin. I'm going to try making it with half and half to see if it gives it a thicker/similar feel while keeping the same taste as the buttermilk...

      Delete
  29. Uhm.. this is AMAZING!I love ranch, but once you've had the good stuff it's hard to have the tangy, not very creamy stuff from the bottle. And it's hard to spend that much on ranch mix, the good kind (;

I love this! I wasn't sure it would be very good, I mean it's basic, simple ingredients but it is DELICIOUS! I've given out the recipe to everyone at work after they've tried it.

I've also subbed it for ranch mix in recipes (like cheddar bacon ranch pasta, etc.) and it works great!

Thank you so much for sharing!

  33. What is granulated onion and granulated garlic? I assume "powder"? Anxious to try this recipe!

    ReplyDelete
  34. This recipe is super yummy. I used minced garlic and chopped dehydrated onions. Also I read someone was gonna shorten the amount of dill cause it sounded like to much. I was thinking the same thing and I was even thinking the lemon juice would make it to tangy but I decided to first make it the original way I read it. Well I was wrong this is a awesome recipe and I wouldn't change a thing.

This recipe sounds great, I can't wait to try it on my kiddo and see if she notices that it's not Hidden Valley :) A tip for funneling it into a milk jug; cut a 20oz soda bottle in half and use the end with the lid (lid removed of course) to funnel thick liquids. the opening is bigger and it allows thick liquids to flow more freely :) Works great for pancake batter made ahead too!

  50. Thanks for sharing this recipe! I came across it on Pinterest. We are a family of 2 and I didn't need quite that much dry mix made up so I made the recipe smaller. I also made it a lighter version. I wasn't sure how it would turn out using the light ingredients but it was amazing...and this is coming from a RANCH SNOB! Here is the smaller quantities for those asking:
    1/2 TBS Black Pepper
    2 1/2 TBS Parsley Flakes
    1 TBS Garlic Salt
    3/4 tsp Kosher Salt
1/2 TBS Garlic Powder(didn't have granulated but this works fine)
1 1/2 TBS onion powder(didn't have granulated but his works fine)
    3/4 tsp Dill Weed

Mix 1 TBS dry mix with:
    1 cup light mayo
1 cup cultured low fat buttermilk
    3/4 cup light sour cream
    1/2 tsp lemon juice

  60. I'm really curious to try this, because the *only* ranch I like is the semi-homemade Hidden Valley Ranch (the dry seasoning dressing packet mixed with mayo and I use plain milk instead of buttermilk). Wondering how it compares to HVR packet-made. I wonder why HVR pre-made ranch in the bottle doesn't taste as good as the semi-homemade stuff!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The packets of HV have a powdered buttermilk additive to make their product more sellable...meaning, it keeps people from having to buy buttermilk when most people have regular milk in the house. The only time I buy buttermilk is when I make fried chicken, so I get why they do that. When I tried this dressing, I had enough to make myself and my sister a jar - so I recommend making one for a friend or family member unless you go thru that much dressing, or you use buttermilk often. I suspect the needed preservatives, lack of fresh ingredients and mass production alter the taste :/

  62. Made this mix. In my personal opinion, I definitely recommend blending it in a spice grinder otherwise the dill and parsley sit on top and you don't get an even blend of spices. It's worth trying. It tastes different than Hidden Valley, but it is just as tasty and worth the value! Very fresh tasting dressing...although I make 1/4 of the serving at a time...which still makes a 12 ounce mason jar of dressing!!! That's plenty for my small family :) Thanks for the recipe!

  63. How long does it keep after you make it?

  64. This is WONDERFUL!! I love good ranch dressing, but hate all the bottled stuff at the grocery store!! BLEH!! This dressing is fabulous!! I now eat ranch on everything... dunk chips, veggies, sandwiches... have even poured it over pork chops and rice (yes, I am now addicted)!! I wonder what additions could made to make other variations; for example, I LOVE Litehouse brand jalepeno ranch dressing. So, need to play with how much jalepeno, taco seasoning, green onions, etc. to add to come close to that flavor.

Thanks for sharing this recipe and totally changing my life!! :-)

  67. I've tried lots of homemade ranch recipes and until some ground thyme is added in it might taste good, but never quite right. Try adding a tsp of ground thyme to the mix (usually just a dash to make a cup of dressing so I am totally guessing for a dry mix) and it will take something this good and push it over the top!
