I am infatuated with wood pallet projects and I wish I had a huge stack of unwanted pallets just waiting for me to be creative.
But I am not going to lie, I have never created anything using wood so it is very intimidating to me. So to help push me over the edge I have created a compilation of many of my favorite pallet projects. I really want to try something I just don't know what.

ReplyDeleteI'm part way there. I realized I have an unending supply of pallets with 3 new housing developments going up nearby. I found a pallet by the side of the road, dragged it home, tore it apart with a crowbar (all by myself!), and I've sanded the boards. That's as far as I've gotten though. Hoping to paint it and hang it this weekend!

ReplyDeleteI made a small wood "Faux Barn Door" as a backdrop for pictures for my Etsy shop. My husband and I took the wood apart and then reassembled it to look like a door. It is so interesting and I leave it out even when I'm not taking photos. Love some of the projects above. I love pallets!

ReplyDeleteI've made a bit of a business out of pallets and fence boards. Check out https://www.facebook.com/ALifeMorePalletable to see some of my projects. The hardest part of using pallets is dismantling them. I use a hammer and pry bar to break them down. At first it took me an hour to bust down a pallet- now, I can do it in 15 minutes. It's intimidating at first but the only thing you have to loose is some of your time and free lumber. Have at it and have fun!

ReplyDeleteAs far as finding pallets, check with pretty much any store. I had a hard time finding some because many recycle them back but the local hardware store will let me have some that may be a little damaged. You can always get a couple and fix them up. Also, if you know anyone who heats with pellets and have alot delivered, they may have some too. A friend of mine has several hanging out in her yard from her pellet delivery~heading over to get them!

DeleteCan I ask what yall's secret is for taking the pallets apart without ruining the boards so bad? I have tried and it is difficult. I have some great ideas also but it is that first step of getting them apart. Thanks in advance.

New to all this so I am not sure what is easiest to respond to questions.
I haven't taken one apart yet because I haven't been brave enough to tackle one of these projects. I heave heard that you can use a circular saw to just cut them out or you need a crowbar, but the latter way takes a lot of patience and hard work. If you try anything I would love to see what you did!

tl2748@aol.com - The one I used for the apothecary cabinet I took apart with a circular saw. I'm taking one apart now with a rubber mallet, a hammer, a small hand-size cro-bar, & lots of patience to get the boards out in one piece.
I would have never thought of it's possible uses! Incredible!

ReplyDeleteRight now we are making a storage box for our deck out of old pallets. It's big enough for toys and to house cushions and all our pool equipment during the off-season, plus to be used as a bench when we need more seating on the deck. My husband is a truck driver and brings home pallets that have been left at his drop yard. It was hard dismantling the first one or two, and I have to admit when there are a ton of nails sometimes I cheat and saw down two ends and only strip the middle nails off with a crowbar.

DeleteGreat ideas, feeling inspired. I painted a pallet like an American flag this year, and so far set it out in front of our tree for memorial day and flag day, gonna pull it out again for the 4th :)
ReplyDeleteWow, that is impressive. I do all my projects in wood (pine, poplar and oak) and have tried pallets only twice. I am not patient enough to get them apart without tearing up the wood very badly and end up with scrap. But you pallets look great, and your projects really deserve a big WOW.

I build picket fences out of pallets. To make one picket panel, I take one pallet and saw the top off right at the top crossbar. On the back side, I saw again right at the middle crossbar. This releases the top/back portion to fall off, leaving a base with pickets on top. Then I pry off the slats from the piece that fell off and nail them on to the base of the main section. This makes feet, so that each pallet panel section is free-standing and moveable. Next I put a primer coat of paint (either left overs or something I pick up for almost no money at the mis-match secion in the paint store. Next I measure and tape off a pointy section on the top of each slat and paint the front in a contrast color from the primer coat. Then pull off the tape, and wallah. A section of a picket fence that is free standing and appears to have points on the top of each picket slat. When I line up a row of these sections it makes a nice fence, but if I want to have an outdoor dinner in a stiff wind, I can move the picket panels around the picnic table to act as wind block or privacy screen, or what ever.

ReplyDeleteMy husband can get wood pallets out on the rig so he brought some home. My father-in-law made a coffee table, side table, and tv stand out of pallets for their den and they look great. My husband made me a table to go by our front door to match our rustic furniture and I love it!

ReplyDeleteI have made a pallet coffee table similar to the first one above and also a matching couch/platform from pallets like the stadium seating above but just one. It was scary at first (circle saw!) but really gratifying and pretty easy.

I'm currently making a bed frame that looks like a pallet. I love pallet projects but because most pallets are power-washed and therefore have chemicals I know you shouldn't be around them too much.
ReplyDeleteactually my husband and I built a home from pallets. It is 30 ' x 40 feet, and very nicely done. Very insulated and the walls are 12 inches thick.. We have been in this home for 13 years, and are very comfortable. There are multitude of things to be made from pallets...

ReplyDeleteMy husband and I have been building pallet furniture. The hardest thing was taking them apart. We learn to use a saw zaw and cut the nails instead of trying to pry them apart. It's been a real adventure and we are enjoying ourselves very much...most days anyway. Best of luck to you.

I started with a wine rack/magazine shelf, next was a table, a dog house, a bird house, and my picket fence,,, now am on to my inside flooring, kitchen cabinets and porch. I will be adding adirondak chairs to the list very very soon, hoping to sell them to offset the cost of hauling my "loves" home.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to know I'm not the only one out there so fascinated with pallets. I have built plenty out of wood just not pallets. I've never been afraid to jump in and try anything. That used to impress my husband, now it scares him...lol...I built a full built-in pantry the full width and height of my laundry room between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I built the grandsons a 4ft wide by 5ft tall toybox with the bookcase and padded, covered seat during the same time. I just created their room. They are still small, my oldest being 3. I told my husband I'm out of wood so now seems like a good time to start ripping out the shower and now I can't find my tool bag. I think he is scared of what he may come home to if I get my hands on some pallets...lol

Just brought two pallets home today. Plan is to make /paint a flag. Realized the slats/stripes run the short way so that means I have to add some reenforcement, remove those slats and lay them the other way, then paint. Also gotta' cut a star so they are all the same size. Think it's going to be a little more work than I expected but will give it a try!
